    Correct “Sequencing” = POWER

Everyone reading this article is guilty of copying JD’s (John Daly) philosophy of gripping it and ripping it to hit the golf ball farther. While I do agree with this method more so than trying to guide the ball into fairways, I hope to shed light on the source of true power in the golf swing.

Before I begin, I would like to stress the importance of mastering the basic fundamentals (grip, posture, aim) and the positive snowball effect they will create in the golf swing. Assuming you have achieved a proper grip, setup, and rotation of the shoulders behind the ball at the top of the swing, you are now ready to unleash the power. Having said that, the correct sequencing in the downswing will still improve your game when the fundamentals are a work in progress.

What moves first? Keep in mind there are many different ways to perform each part of the golf swing correctly. However, to maximize power you must begin the forward swing with your weight shifting “forward’ while the body begins rotating toward your target. This move should be initiated from the ground up. Imagine throwing a baseball or football. Your initial move is the weight shifting or releasing from your back foot to the front foot. The body then begins to rotate which pulls the arms while the hands are the last to move. This sequencing should be the same in the swing. Practice the move first by swinging a club back and forth while relaxed. Make sure you are feeling rhythmic as if you were tossing a ball. Pay close attention to the sequence of you body as you begin forward. If you can begin to incorporate this feeling into the golf swing, your scores will begin to drop due to longer and more consistent shots.  Watch the tour players to see how the move is sometimes initiated even before the player reaches the top of the swing. I.e. Ricky Fowler and Zach Johnson. Understanding the correct sequencing will allow you to think about swinging faster rather than harder, which a common denominator for all long hitters on tour.  As always, feel free to contact me with any questions. Cheers to a better game!
