Three drills for more consistent putting Print E-mail

Lag drill - This drill will help give you a sense of feel for the speed of the greens. Controlling your distance in putting is crucial if you want to be a consistent putter. Get in the center of the putting green and drop a few balls. Practice putting the ball as close to the edge of the green as you can without touching the fringe. This will help you focus on rhythm and distance rather than concentrating so much on holing the putts.

Ladder Drill – Try to find a straight putt that is at least 8 feet long. Put four balls in 2-foot increments and start putting with the closest ball to the hole. Try to make all of them without missing. This will not only continue to help you with the speed of the greens but will give you a great sense of how long you need to take the putter back for each distance. We should always use the same rhythm and make the length of the backstroke longer to make more putts. Too often, I see people hit the ball harder for longer putts and softer for 3 footers. This will only lead to inconsistent contact and direction because the putter face will close as you decelerate and open if you accelerate too fast.

Around the world – Find a short putt that has some break. Place 4 balls around the hole about two feet out. You should have one straight uphill putt, one straight downhill putt, one side hill right-to-left putt, and one side hill left-to-right putt. Practice making these four putts without missing. Then back each putt up two feet and repeat. This should be the last drill you do before each round of golf. Good putting requires confidence and by practicing the shorter putts and seeing the ball drop in the hole, you will gain more confidence than you ever thought possible.

I recommend practicing these three drills for 5 minutes each. In doing so, you will give yourself a great opportunity to become more efficient with your practice time which will lead to consistent putting. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Cheers to no more three putts!
